Past President 's Letter. 2019-2020

Success! Spring 2020 Conference.
Members, Thanks for attending this year's 2020 NYSDTSEA Conference. The weather was beautiful and we had a great day of speakers and events! It's always good to reconnect with experts in the field and stay updated on new materials. It's important that we share this information with the student drivers we serve in our programs. Mark your calendar for next year; same time of year and same place, for Conference 2021. Congratulations to Troy Townsend and Mike DeMay on 2020 Election results. Appreciation also for Jeff Baier, Treasurer, Carissa Murphy, Secretary and Dan Lustica, Past President for all your work and dedication to help make the conference a success. We have a great team of teachers working for the Association. Many hands make lighter work. Here's wishing you all a happy and healthy Spring.
Winter 2020
The new semester is upon us. Hopefully you had a successful Fall session. Spring is right around the corner...only 58 days away. In the meantime, I would like to remind you of the 11th Annual NYSDTSEA Conference, which takes place at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY on March 7, 2020. We have plenty of informative and useful activities planned. AAA will be there with new facts and figures, Donna Stressel will be presenting on Car-Fit and why it's important to fit securely in your vehicle. Dave Arnone will update us on the New York State Curriculum Project and Rob Lyon from NYSDMV will discuss the new 5 hour online format. Toyota will have a virtual field trip/presentation educating us on their standard safety equipment and options on their current vehicles. As always, the buffet is included in your registration fee (it's a hit every year!).
In other news, if you teach driver education and also get a stipend for administrative duties (filling out paperwork, scheduling courses, etc), please contact me at [email protected]. Late last year, the association advocated on behalf of some members that may not have received full credit toward their retirement salary for driver education. Though NYSTRS seems to have backed off (if programs meet the NYSED requirements, your driver education salary should be added to your retirement profile), administrative stipends are in a grey area. We're still working on it with NYSTRS, but I need to know how many members may be affected.
I hope to see you at the conference on March 7. Stay safe on the road and thanks for all you do for novice drivers.
