Driver Education Teacher Approval
SUNY Broome (aka: Broome Community College) and SUNY Oswego are the two approved State Education Department (SED) colleges/universities that offer Driver Education Teacher Preparation Programs for New York State Teacher Approval. Both classroom and hands on training portions of the Driver Education courses make up this exciting program. The program provides some flexibility for teachers taking the program; offering blended courses; doing part of the coursework online and mentoring with a professor on campus and/or on Zoom, or as a traditional program working directly with the professor on campus for the entire course. Traditional classes are offered on weekends and blended courses are available online making the program easier for teachers to attend and the program components. Both SUNY locations offer Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer to meet the demands of busy teacher schedules. Courses meet teacher continuing education requirements. Teachers actually learn by doing rather than just by reading a book or doing computer work.
Coursework
The following courses meet the requirements for NYS Provisional and Permanent State Education Dept. Approval: ( see chart on following pages for NYS SED Requirements.)
Fundamentals of Safety /History of Risk Management
No pre-requisites
Study of the fundamentals of safety including the accident problem and the societal impact, causation, and counter measures of accidents. This course explores safety in the home, school, workplace, recreational personal protection, traffic and disaster safety. Special emphasis is on drinking and driving, defensive driving and attitude awareness programs .
This course is usually taken after Traffic Safety 1 and 2 but can be taken out of sequence. (3 Credits).
Driver and Traffic Safety Education 1 - Improving Classroom Instruction
Prerequisites: Clean Driving Record, 21+ years old, licensed a minimum of two years, secondary teacher certificate in approved subject area from SED.
For experienced teachers desiring to meet New York State qualifications for instruction in secondary schools; This course prepares teachers with the organization, curriculum, teaching techniques and administration of a driver education program in secondary schools. Emphasis is placed on the study of the task analysis, methods and materials of teaching classroom and practices in high school driver education programs. It is part 1 of a 2 part coursework that leads to a provisional approval to teach driver education in secondary schools. (This course is taken concurrently with Traffic Safety 2. ) (3 CE Credits).
Driver and Traffic Safety Education 2- Improving Laboratory Instruction
Prerequisites: Clean 2 yr. Driving Record, 21+ years old, licensed a minimum of two years, a secondary teacher certificate in an approved subject area from SED and Traffic Safety 1 or concurrent study.
This course deals with both an analysis and practical experience in teaching the laboratory phases of Driver Education.
The course is designed to provide learning activities that focus on developing operational skills for the novice driver. Emphasis is placed on laboratory organization and administration, maintaining a learning environment, developing laboratory instructional modules and hands on behind the wheel, simulation and range teaching experiences.(This course is taken concurrently with Traffic Safety 1). (3 CE Credits).
Problems and Trends/Issues in Driver Education
Prerequisite: Traffic Safety 1 and 2. This course can be taken out of sequence after the first six (6) basic credits are completed. Recommend one (1) year teaching but can be completed anytime before the 5 year expiration provisional date.

The last of the four courses in Driver Education Teacher Preparation Program, this course reviews the current issues of instructional, supervisory and psychological aspects of driver and traffic safety. Advanced techniques of instruction, new resources, research , professional problems NYS Pre Licensing Course, Driver Improvement courses and drivers with disabilities are all part of the series of topics and projects students in this course explore. (3 Credits).
