DMV - Parent Handbook Now Available
The DMV has created a new Parent handbook to be distributed. It’s a helpful resource that is likely to decrease stress associated with having a child transition into a new driver.
Younger drivers are involved in more crashes than other age groups and the crashes that involve teens also tend to be more serious. However these crashes are preventable. New York State’s (NYS) Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) law is designed to prevent teen crashes by helping teens gradually and safely build their skills and gain experience behind the wheel. The NYS GDL law is responsible for a 60% decrease in crashes for 16 and 17 year-old drivers.
While the NYS GDL law is effective at lowering teen crash risk, it is an extremely complicated system with differing rules depending on the driver’s geographic region, stage of licensure and time of day. For effective enforcement and compliance to occur, law enforcement officers and parents must understand the components of the GDL. To address these barriers, NYSDOH staff, with the aid of the Young Driver Team (comprised of representatives from NYS Department of Health, Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, NYS Police, and NYS Association of Chiefs of Police), developed GDL reference guides for law enforcement officers and parents. The tools provide a summary of GDL law and include information by licensing stage and region as well as driving restrictions and requirements (i.e., nighttime and passenger restrictions, required hours of practice, etc.). The tools are available online and can also be ordered free of charge by contacting Annie Mirabito at [email protected] or 518-402-7900.

REMINDER: APRIL IS NATIONAL DISTRACTED DRIVING MONTH!
Thanks for your vote of confidence and electing me this year's President of NYSDTSEA. I've been teaching driver education for a long time and want to give back and be a mentor to the new generation of driver education teachers. I was so happy to see such a great turn out at this year's conference. It's great to see new, young faces entering the profession. We know that there is a lot to do to make our high school students safe and we will have both challenges and opportunities to face in the future. It's conferences like this that recharge us and help us stay current. Networking is key. Sharing is important. Each of us can make a difference. Our Association is a great way to keep everyone up-to-date and informed. Stay tuned by visiting our sites frequently. Get some of your colleagues to join NYSDTSEA. It's still only $25 and that helps to keep our newsletter and website on the internet as well as helps with logistics and mailings for our conferences.
It appears that our New York State DE Programs are strong and growing. We need to help Betsy Rees pilot the curriculum modules. Contact her before summer school to see how you might be able to get involved.
Mary Coschignano is working hard at keeping our schools and teachers approved. We thank both Phil and Mary for that all that they do for us at SED Rob Lyon is a great supporter and we thank him too for management of our programs at the DMV. Nancy Andrus, our ADTSEA representative will be reporting back to the National on the strength of our New York Driver Education Association. We have a lot to be proud of.
I am honored to be at the helm and hope that I can continue to add to our growth. This is a great profession and we certainly are doing our part to keep our young people safe. If you have something going on at your school let us know so that we can share this information with others.
