Well, just a couple of weeks to go now before our conference and it looks like this is shaping up
to be a really fun, informative event. If you check out the tabs under "Conference" you will see the program agenda, the pre-conference workshop and those dedicated people who have registered so far.
We also have an election coming up and need all professional members to cast a ballot. You get this by way of email. Please send your votes back asap so that we can tally them for the Conference. If you forget to vote at home you can still vote at the conference. We will have the computer set up for this.
If you haven't seen the flyer regarding the Spring Teen Summit that DMV is hosting in May, please go to the flyer information under this tab, on the NYSDTSEA homepage or at the Toolkit under SafeNY.gov. This is a great opportunity to get students involved in this statewide traffic safety initiative. Chuck Conroy will be at the conference to provide us with more info.
Membership is only $20 and the conference is $50 so for under $100 you can receive the professional credit that most of us need for professional development. Consider asking your school to support your efforts and insurance for teacher liability.

Thank you Conference committee for putting together what looks like a great menu of topics for the 2014 conference. Emails will be going out to remind attendees to register for the conference. Also, the Membership Drive for the new year is off to a great start. We are encouraging Regional Reps to bring in a couple of new members. Remember to renew early to get that special savings.
This year we have a special pre-conference workshop with hands on activities that will help enhance your programs. Please consider attending this worthwhile seminar. Some schools have monies set aside for these types of workshops. If these funds are non existent you might consider asking one or two of your local insurance companies and/or car dealers to sponsor you. They often set money aside and you can give them credit for your enrichment at your Parent Meetings.
Lastly, if there's anyone interested in running for an office we invite you to contact the election committee. The more involved we are the stronger the Association becomes. See you in less than eight weeks!
October Issue
It's been a busy beginning of the school year for most of us. Core curriculum issues, standards, some are teaching new subject areas. It seems like there is not enough time in a day to complete all that we want to accomplish. But our dedicated members are still working towards accomplishing the goals we set forth at this last year's conference. To that end we have our Conference date set for March 7-8th, 2014. Once again we will be hosting the Annual Conference at the Turning Stone Conference Center and Resort . More information will be found in the November /December issue - so stay tuned. Our Curriculum Committee has been busy putting together our NYSDTSEA recommendation for state standards. Anyone interested in serving on a curriculum committee both for NYSDTSEA or DERIC ( Driver Education Resources Instruction and Curriculum ) can contact me so that I can direct you to the committees working on these issues.
If anyone has a suggestion regarding the Conference Program please contact us through the website with your ideas.

NYSDTSEA receives information weekly from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention. This can almost be a full time job just reading though these memos. But the information presented is eye opening and helpful when presenting these various discussion topics to our students. Unfortunately, if I were to send them out to your in boxes these emails might get buried and unread. So I think it would be easier to get this information to you if I set up a tab under "President's Message" and let you download and read these important documents when you have the time and inclination to do so. Check out the topic items and if you have interest these bulletins will be linked on that page.
Hopefully you have been hearing about the DERIC Summits that are being conducted throughout the State. The Dealing With Distraction Module that was discussed at the Conference is still being worked on and you can weigh in on goals and activities that you would like to see included in this Dealing With Distractions module. For more information you can contact

We are checking dates and will get back to you as soon as possible so you can mark your calendars. If you felt that this event was worthwhile, please help us spread the word to others. If you are teaching this summer, encourage those who teach with you to join the Association We would like to represent as many NYS driver education teachers as possible. It's a small price to pay. Belonging shows that we as teachers are interested and want to stay up-to-date with trends in our profession.

If you didn't get a chance to check out the 3.0 ADTSEA Curriculum on display at the exhibit area, go to their website www.adtsea.org and you can check it out there. That's one of our goals this year - to get our curriculum updated so that we have a current cookbook to follow. More on this later. Lastly, if you haven't clicked on the MANY items located both here on the FRONTVIEW and also on the NYSDTSEA website don't forget that all you have to do is click the various icons that are displayed and that will open doors to a lot of good and useful information.

Legislation action that has been taken with Senators from Lori's area was discussed. No action has been taken at this time only names and contact with the office has been made. We will need to follow up as the weather gets nicer.
Regional Reps appointed as there have been no elections in the Regions. Goals for them were discussed and what action might be required to grow membership. We will have an April Membership Drive to increase numbers the month of April. $15 membership fee will be extended until April 15th. Some members have paid $25 for Professional Membership foregoing the $10 fee and we thank them for this.
We will be extending Associate Membership to our speakers - FREE - as payment for their attendance and participation.
Discussed that Fred Mottola would be willing do to a few workshops for $$ this next year and this might be a way to serve the membership in various areas rather than just at the Conference site. We will negotiate contracts and see if Regions are interested. Professional Development credit can be offered.
Phil Dettelis has most recently updated the Approved Program list and has it running again so we should challenge Regional Directors to call approved schools in their area this next month and get names of teachers and email addresses.
Lynne will be Conference Chairperson next year so we need to ask the membership where they want to have the conference for 2014.
Jennifer Sawyer was unable to attend due to personal health reasons. We want to thank her for what she was able to do this last year for us.
Jeff Baier has been doing a great job keeping track of membership and conference attendees and fees. He will provide a full report at the end of April after our membership drive.
8:00 pm Brett Robinson was invited to our meeting and dicussed what ADTSEA has been doing to improve curriculum across the country. We discussed adopting the 3.0 curriculum and how this might be done. He will be checking to see cost, how our Association can customize the program - Unit 1 he indicated could be started right away per the design of the program. We discussed how NYSDMV has already put together documents for Parents and Teens that can be incorporated into this part of the 3.0 material. More discussion to follow in subsequent curriculum meetings.
9:30 We adjourned for dinner and then a visit to the Conference site to make sure we knew where everything was located for the next day Conference.
A motion for the meeting to be adjorned was made by Lynne Renner and seconded by Lori Updyke.

Thank you all for your support this last year, 2012. By all accounts out Conference at Turning Stone Center was a success. Weather held up; the location and staff at Turning Stone made not only our planning easy but also made the conference experience comfortable and professional. Our speakers were OUTSTANDING . We move ahead recharged and ready for the next semester SUMMER SESSIONS.
Our newly elected officers begin their term with over 60 members to serve - and the goal to increase those numbers will be the new challenge, as we want to represent as many driver education teachers as possible. We set out to fill all Regional Rep positions and we accomplished this goal. Now we need to make sure that these reps spread the word so that we can have even greater representation next year at the Conference. It truly looks like our Association is growing and working to help teachers do the best job that can be done. Good Luck Lori, Lynne, Jill, and Jeff this next year 2013-2014.
February News and Messages
The Conference is set - hopefully the force will be with us - I mean the weather :) and all of those who are planning on attending will be able to make it. I think we have all the major topics covered. There will be plenty of hands on activity as well as information that you can take home and implement immediately.
Else where in this newsletter - under HOME - you will see that there are a number of grants being offered to schools and students who enlist their talents in creating safety projects. Check this out - as every year someone wins these contests. Why not make it your school? Get you Student Government involved.
Also, NYSDTSEA has a poster contest - see NSSP tab for more information. Enter a poster from your school and that student may win this year's contest. We will post this poster on our website. Some lucky students will be able to add this to their college resume. That surely can be a help. Elections are coming up. We will send a ballot to you by way of email and you in return can send it back to our ballot box. You can either send in your vote to the election committee or vote at the Conference. Absentee votes are confidential. Only the committee will open the box. Lastly, if you haven't sent your early bird membership fee in - what are you waiting for? It's only $10 for professional members - it won't break the bank but will help us with Association operating costs.

Our Curriculum Committee has been busy reviewing materials in order to update our Driver Education Curriculum Guide. More specifically, they want to make sure we are updating to meet the NHTSA Administrative Standards. See our website Homepage for details. These standards have been developed to assist states in planning and implementing effective driver education programs. A lot of great work has already been done for us. Additionally. the latest release of the 3.0 Driver Education Curriculum has also been part of this committee's review. Committee research shows that this material is helping other driver education associations across the country with their updates. An appealing aspect of the material is that NHTSA and ADTSEA called on leading experts in the driver education professional community to take on the task of creating up-to-date administrative standards and model curriculum materials. We are taking advantage of the great work that our colleagues have put into creating these tools.
The committee reports that the framework for the 3.0 ADTSEA Curriculum follows a professional educational approach that allows flexibility for local conditions. The material is very compatible with the newest textbooks and materials that we currently are using in our programs. Check it out.
We will explore this topic with our membership at our Conference. Allen Robinson, CEO of ADTSEA, is on our program. He will be enlightening us on how we can implement and make the best use of their material. Ultimately, it will be up to us, the driver education professional community to play the key role in promoting and implementing the latest standards. If you are interested in helping the committee update materials and have ideas that our programs can model, please get involved and join this committee.
Also we note some other news this month:
Posit Science, a leading science based brain training software company, is investigating the role of cognitive performance in teenage crashes. The research is being funded by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The results of this research will be used to develop training programs to reduce teen crash risk. Your participation will help achieve this important goal. Check out their site. Student participants will be paid to be part of the research. https://brainhq.positscience.com/teendriving

It's difficult keeping up with all that is being done in the Traffic Safety field. May I suggest that you continue adding to your web log Driver safety sites so you have the latest info at hand. Here are a few sites that should be added to your list. NYSDTSEA tries to have links to sites that we think are of interest to our membership. If you have sites that you think others can benefit from please add these to the our blog. We set this up so that we can share information. So far it has been under utilized. Short and to the point - help us help teachers find current and relevant info. It's easy to do and you can share right from school.

A new school year has started and with that a whole new group of young drivers. Seize the moment and even if you aren't teaching driver education this semester you can still be the face of the program and continue to promote safe driving. Check out the contests that promote driver and traffic safety projects and encourage your student body to help spread the word. There are a lot of scholarships out there for students, offered by our traffic safety partners. These are designed to keep students thinking about their safety and the safety of their friends. Check out our resources on the web page for updates on these programs and enlist other teachers to help push these projects; whether it is a writing contest, PSA development project or even a musical message. Our kids are talented and these types of projects help to build their resumes while giving them a focus for their message; staying safe during their teenage years.
Our Conference site is set for next Spring 2013. Turning Stone Conference /Resort/Casino is our destination. More on the agenda soon. See the web site and flyer in this e newsletter. We are hoping for a great showing this year by moving the conference site a bit north off the NYS Thruway. Additionally, we are seeking a host for 2014 Conference, so step up and let us hear from you if your region would like to host this next year event. Also, if there is something that you would like to see on the agenda, don't be shy. Send us an email with your ideas. We are in the agenda planning stage and are entertaining all ideas and speakers for this event.
May I remind those who are teaching driver education this semester - Yes dealing with distractions is the hot topic that everyone is talking about - but we know that our good habits will save us often AND bad habits will get us into trouble eventually. So as driver education teachers we are always trying to establish good habits. It's so easy for our students to bring poor habits to our lessons; performance that they have picked up by watching family and friends. It is our job to try to correct procedures and provide good strategies that can last a life time. Have a great school year!

New era of cars ushers in new rules of the road
Old habits die hard, and so do old-school driving lessons. Changes in vehicle design, such as the introduction of power steering, and technology like airbags and anti-lock brakes have prompted a change in how we drive, says Maria Wojtczak, co-founder and chief operating officer of DrivingMBA, an Arizona-based driver training and education provider. In fact, some formerly advocated driving practices no longer are valid. Read the article and Dr. Allen Robinson’s, ADTSEA CEO, contributions here.

Driver Education Curriculum Version 3.0
NYSDTSEA has been reviewing the 3.0 materials and appreciate the work that has gone into the ADTSEA curriculum development. These materials can help catapult us closer to updating our educational initiatives. We recognize the importance of agreeing on common principles in order to move forward and update our programs. These materials will be helpful for New York's driver education state administrators, teachers (both private and public), curriculum developers, researchers, driving school participants, and association members realize a common foundation. NHTSA has taken big steps to help young drivers and driver education programs by funding this development. They are encouraging the highway safety community to promote the new standards , support the efforts, maintain, upgrade and expand state driver education systems. We, NYSDTSEA, have reached out to ADTSEA to help us understand, customize and implement the work that now has been completed. Stay tune as this will be one of our Conference topics.

PAST NEWS AND MESSAGES
Summer 2012 is flying by. We are trying to get a count regarding how many students participated in driver education this summer. More on this later. Hope your programs are going well and that perhaps you were able to use some of our resources and the website to help you locate current information and dvd programs for your students. We are requesting that all members go to and read the information on the following website:
http://www.gillibrand.senate.gov/newsroom/press/release/gillibrand-announces-final-congressional-passage-of-national-teen-driving-safety-plan. After reading this information, please go to our blog on either the members only page or on our open blog of this newsletter site. Let us know how you feel about what is happening and how this legislation will affect your program. How will it affect the support for your program, and/or the families that you serve? If you can rally parents and students to send letters to Senator Gillibrand, either in support or non support of this movement. this would be helpful. A most important group to reach are the parents whose children haven't taken driver ed yet. How do they feel about not having this program? These are real questions that will have to be answered if this legislation passes. We also need to ask ourselves : Can our programs exist without the carrot of a night driving reward? Is there support for building a strong foundation regarding driving, or are parents only interested in getting students to pass a driver's license test. I think we have the answers, and those taking our programs do too. We need to start speaking out.
With distracted driving accidents on the rise there has to be more to the campaign then just PSA's, videos and speakers. There should be that tie in with concepts and how it actually affects driving. Without an in- car education there will likely be a void that may be very difficult to tackle with just talk. Just saying "NO" is difficult when everyone seems to be addicted to their phones. So, what do you think? Weigh in teachers. If you have forgotten the password for the Member's Only, or somehow didn't receive this info, please contact Jill Crowe our membership Chairperson and she will forward the directions and code to you. [email protected]
JULY NEWS We are starting to prepare for next year's Conference - if you have suggestions please email Lori Updyke our Vice President and she will place these in our committees suggestion box.
REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVES - We are taking count of how many members are in your regions. You can help by contacting us through email to let us know the status of driver education teachers in your area members
so we can make contact with them and ask them to join. Teachers - check out our References page and see what these various safety groups and organizations are offering in the way of program materials, dvds, and contests.
JUNE NEWS
In the coming months most of our members will be teaching summer driver education and it will be important that the most current information be presented to our audience. We can make a big difference if we continue to not only teach our basic curriculum but also provide as many opportunities to show student drivers the importance of staying vigil to "no cell phone usage while driving." There are so many different campaigns out there and opportunities for us to partner with these groups. We can help the cause by presenting their materials and spreading their message. If you have any questions either email them to our webmaster link or directly to one of your officers and we will try and get back to you promptly. If it is a general question, use our blog to put something out there and others can respond.

Fall Message 2011
As we turn the last page of the 2011 calendar we look back at this year and review our hopes, dreams, accomplishments and setbacks. All of these experiences help move us to be better in the future. There have been many ups and downs; some programs being dropped from school curriculum's , some programs struggling to stay on the road, gas prices were high, some programs had vehicle woes that needed attention, some programs lost an instructor. There were many new issues to tackle too. We were, are and will be combating and integrating technology in the future. Trying to keep up with its sophistication, figuring out where it fits and where it doesn't is always a struggle. Teaching the basic skills to the novice driver while incorporating new skills for the more advance drivers can be challenging. The divide seems to be greater these days. More and more distractions challenge drivers. Our lectures now have to be more persuasive rather than just informational. It seems that we have to be more creative to compete with all the messages our students are seeing. All around there is temptation for our students to cut corners. Both literally and figuratively. More and more we see students having attention problems; internal and external. Even the traffic environment and infrastructure makes our work ever changing.
BUT with these challenges also comes opportunities. It's good to change things up and have discussions about progress. Let's seize the moment. We need to take time to educate ourselves about all the changes taking place in driving. We need to be smart and current as our kids can in an instant find out almost anything with a swipe and type on a screen. So where do we find time to do all this? There isn't enough time in the day? Plan on attending our Annual State Conference to learn more about what the future holds in store for driver education. We can learn a lot through sharing with other driver educators. This is an easy and professional way that you can help yourself. It's also a way to gain new insight and strengthen our profession. We hope to see you in April.
