Steve Brown Hall of Fame Inductee
Steve was a former member of DASEANYS 1976 - 1988. He was a loved, respected and dedicated Driver Education Teacher for over 30 years , helping to keep driver education in his area schools for all students. He was part of the team that helped write the NYSDTSEA Constitution and By-Laws, served on many committees and was benevolent in donating funds to help the re-charter of NYSDTSEA in 2011. This helped move the Association into a 501 c3 status. He was elected 2011 NYSDTSEA President and had many plans for his tenure as the third president of our association. Unexpectedly he died in July 2011 of health reasons and his input this year has been missed.
We have continued to work this year in an effort to complete some of his stated goals. He was nominated and accepted as our first member into our Hall of Fame. We paid tribute to his contributions by dedicating our Conference luncheon to him this year. |

Hello New York State Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association Members. I am currently a teacher at the Monticello High School. I have taught driver education in the Sullivan, Orange, Dutchess, and Ulster counties for many years. I also teach the Five Hour Pre Licensing course, and am certified to teach NYSP driver improvement programs. I am still very excited about our Association being resurrected after so many years of not having a strong voice or representation in the state. The last two yearsI have served asa Secretary, and have tried to keep our work alive even with the budget crunches that we have experienced . I would like to continue working for the Association and hope that you will consider voting for me to fill the position of Secretary for this next year2012.

1st Quarter Message from Jane Townsend/Acting President 2011-2012
We are on the move! So far it's been a pretty mild winter. We are hoping for safe roads and good driving as we move closer to our Conference, April 21st, 2012.
Your Executive Board continues to work on the organization and administration of our Association. We are working to streamline our operations and even on a shoestring budget provide useful services for our members. Note that we will continue adding to our website and this newsletter, which I might add has been receiving some very good reviews. Our aim is to have a one stop shopping site for our members and other supporters of our traffic safety goals. So keep checking back often to see what is new. Students are finding our Resource Page a good place to find up-to-date information. Please, if you have something you want added or want us to investigate , email us via the webmaster link.
We are adding a "Members only site" to our menu and plan to have helpful information and a blog for asking questions at this section of the web site.Check out the trigger videos as these are helpful to start discussion.
Our membership drive is continuing and I am happy to report that we have more members this year than last year so our efforts are paying off. We continue to grow and once we have the ability to contact the teachers in the field we will make headway in finding out where we can best help our teachers and programs. We will be adding membership benefits in 2012. More on this later... But please take advantage of the reduced membership fee of $10 and encourage your
colleagues to join. This "special" will only last up to Conference time and then we will revert back to our regular membership fee. There are two methods of payment; Check or Pay pal. I am hoping to see your name on the roster :) Remember, membership is by calendar year, so join early.
Plan on attending our Annual State Conference April 21st, 2012 to hear more about what the future holds in store for driver education. Our committees are busy working on Curriculum, Legislation, Membership, Constitution, Public Relations and our Conference. If you would like to be a part of any of these activities and provide time and expertise don't hesitate to contact me. We can learn a lot through sharing with other driver educators. Many hands make light work.
We plan to have some interesting speakers at our conference that will provide innovative classroom techniques and also provide up to date information and methods regarding new materials and traffic law. This is an easy and professional way that you can stay current and also a great way to gain new insight and strengthen your presentation skills. We hope to see you in April.

Monticello HS Driver Ed Club receives Grant! 2010-2011
The Monticello High School Driver's Ed Club received, for the second straight year, a $2,000 grant from Erie Insurance Co. to continue its safe driving messages on Jefferson Street, at one of the busiest intersections in Sullivan County. The club is led by driver's education teacher Jim Barnicle with support from local insurance agent Kirk Harris, who leads the Harris, Monti and McLaughlin Agency.
The students and Jim Barnicle meet on a regular basis to brainstorm ideas for the sign, so as not to be a distraction but to deliver a quick safe-driving message aimed at teen-age drivers.
In addition, within the school, the club posts safe-driving messages, reaching students who don't have the opportunity to take the driver's education class. Announcements are made during the school year with updates on new laws and other pertinent information for teachers and students alike.
Finally, part of the grant money, besides paying for the key messages on Jefferson Street, will cover an upgrade to the lighting this spring, installing new solar lights that will illuminate the sign throughout the day and night.
Those wishing to donate or to suggest an idea to promote safe teen driving can e-mail Barnicle at [email protected].

WEBINAR
Webinar - Rescheduled for: November 27, 2012 (EST)
Earlier this summer, President Obama signed into law a $118 billion highway bill known as MAP-21, the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act. The legislation contains a variety of exciting and important provisions that seek to address the safety of teen drivers and decrease the number of teen traffic crashes each year. NOYS, in partnership with SADD, the National Safety Council and Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, will be offering a 60-minute webinar on Tuesday, October 30, at 2pm EST, to provide an overview of the bill, updates on the sections that impact teen safety and suggested next steps for taking advantage of the new provisions. Participants will learn about the new:
• ‘Teen Traffic Safety Program’ that emphasizes peer to peer programs
• Distracted driving incentive grant program
• Graduated drivers license (GDL) incentive grant program

Get Behind National Teen Driver Safety Week
October 14-20, 2012
Ride Like A Friend. Drive Like You Care (RLAF) is a school-based campaign that encourages safe teen passenger and driver behavior. Student leaders and club members work with teachers and school administrators to plan and conduct a set of in-school RLAF activities that span 3-5 school days. These activities encourage safe in-car behaviors like buckling up and respecting the driver. While RLAF can be conducted throughout the school year, an ideal time is during National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW), which is held annually the third week of October.
All the details on how to conduct the campaign (including downloadable tools) are available online - and they are free! Each RLAF program is meant to be organized, designed, and carried out by teens with the help of a dedicated school staff member as their RLAF advisor. Whether a teacher, coach, or guidance counselor, the advisor works side-by-side with teen leaders to create and implement a successful RLAF campaign.
"Ride Like A Friend" is more than just a phrase! It is a pre-designed campaign created specifically for teens with lots of input from teens. Students, school advisors, and school administrators are not responsible for creating materials or activities for RLAF because the work has already been done by teen driver safety experts who consulted with teens at every step. Student leaders are tasked with choosing safe driving messages for drivers and passengers and sharing them through the pre-prepared activities and materials provided on this website. Because RLAF is completely customizable for each school and community, teens can make the campaign their own.
