Walt Brinker, author of "Roadside Survival: Low-Tech Solutions to Automobile Breakdowns" speaks to families about Summer Auto tips.
FOX8’s Natalie Wilson followed Walt Brinker, author of "Roadside Survival: Low-Tech Solutions to Automobile Breakdowns," for an up-close look at what he sees on the road every day.(see newscast below.) He explained to Natalie, as he did to our NYSDTSEA members, how drivers can be better prepared while on the road this summer.
"We are just weeks away from the beginning of the busy summer travel season" he said, and we really need to pay attention to our vehicles after the winter months. Walt has provided more than 2,000 roadside assists as a hobby and his book helps share ideas that families should do now to avoid traveling mishaps.

March 2016
Just weeks away to the conference. We have a great program. There's already a good showing of attendees. The Professional Development Workshops are also going to be well attended. As always, our luncheon buffet will be fabulous (something there for everyone). Hope to see you there next weekend! We also will be starting a tab on this newsletter for employment opportunities this upcoming Summer. Check it out over the next few months if you are looking for a summer position or if you know of a program that needs driver education teachers let us know so we can post this on this page.
If you are a teacher looking for a driver education teaching position you can go to the members only page and let us know there by providing an email address. We can put administrators in touch with you. Our email address in [email protected].
One last note, this is great month to encourage your local schools to sign up for Teen Crashes
GTG! (Good To Go) All information is on their website at teensafedriving.org/ny under the "Initiatives" tab. As in past years, student groups will earn $200 for holding 3 teen safe driving activities at their schools. See the letter from Susan Pedro, for more information about this program.
Drive Safely To The Conference. Fingers crossed that the weekend weather will be nice. We have been blessed with Spring like weather. Rain or snow we will be set to go!
December 2015
Plans are underway for our 2016 Conference at Turning Stone Conference Center. We have been working to put together a number of interesting topics and speakers that will inform, motivate, and educate you for this upcoming year of driver education. Stay tuned and mark your calendars for March 5th and 6th, 2016.
We have been successful in moving the curriculum, website and newsletter committees along. We are now focusing on strengthening our Regional Representation, statewide membership, publicity projects and gaining recognition with State and Local government agencies, and educating corporate-related agencies of our mission. If you haven't been approached to help serve on a committee consider this your invitation.
On another note, we are entertaining nominations for officer positions. Perhaps you are interested in serving in some capacity. We will be soliciting names for the two positions that are open for election in 2016. It's a two year term for the President and Vice President positions. See page 2 About Us on our website, The Constitution and By Laws outline the responsibilities for these positions. Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in serving.
Lastly, you can help our membership committee by submitting names of driver education teachers who are not currently members of the Association. You know the teachers that are instructing at your schools. Ask if they are members. If not submit their names and we will send them information. There is strength in numbers and we need to reach out to teachers and provide them with the latest information. The goal of our Association is to ensure that driver education teachers in our state have the latest information available.

Thanks for voting me in for a second term President Position. I will continue working with all the committees, trying to establish ties with various groups so that we can work for our common cause. Please feel free to check out the curriculum materials that we have posted both on our website and newsletter. These will help serve as a model guide for your programs. We have changed the password for the "members only" page. If you forgot the ID and Password email us at [email protected] and we will send it to you.
See this Issue's Newsletter for 2015 Conference Pictures.. By all accounts the Conference 2015 was a success!
This conference was a great time to refresh, renew and get up to date on the latest laws, programs and issues in our field. I hope to stay in contact this year with as many of you as possible. The young speakers from the National Coalition of Teen Drivers were great weren't they?. They offered us so many great ideas, and they that can easily be accomplished at our schools. They also provided us a way to get funding for some safety projects. Please let us know if you take them up on their funding ideas. We would love to share your promotion with the rest of the Association.
You may want to check out the webinars that National Safety Council is conducting. We will be posting the links in the Member's Only site on our website. If you haven't ever logged on to one of these events it is really a great way to hear what others across the country are talking about. Check out the site for more information.
